You’re the one getting married, so here are a few tips to keep in mind as you plan your destination wedding:

Be true to your desires. As others express their preferences, concerns, or cast doubt about your choices, stay focused on what expresses your personality. When you yield to others, the likelihood of conflict increases. Won’t you be frustrated by a series of compromises?

Be proactive. Even if you are a seasoned project manager in your work life, planning a destination wedding has different timelines than a more traditional wedding. Think about airline tickets, hotel reservations, food, flowers, activities, decorations and the venue.

Attention to detail results in perfection. Think about factors unique to your destination like currency, logistics, laws. Don’t assume every vendor you hire has your same sense of urgency or desire for perfection.

Think of your big day as a vacation for your guests.  Your destination should include access to the kind of things your family and friends will enjoy. Look for activities and amenities from which your guests may choose. Some like shopping, some like the beach, some like sports. Carefully examine your guest list: anyone pregnant, anyone need a wheel chair, anyone need a chaperone? If someone needs medical attention, where is the nearest hospital? Do the activities you choose break your guests’ budget?

Weather can be an issue. Consider your destination’s latitude, longitude, and the time of year you are getting married. Can you and your guests reliably travel to the location, celebrate your union, and return home without weather delays? Review historical weather data.

Keep your guest list modest. Be sensitive to expenses and include loved ones who will truly enjoy being with you.
